Treatments with Laser Technology
laser The Clínica de Oftalmología de Cali has the following Laser Technology available:

  • Outpatient procedures with Argon laser and Yag Laser.
  • Photodynamic therapy for macular degeneration related to age.

Laser:

This technology allows us to render and administer the treatment of various eye diseases.
Argon is a thermal laser that is used to coagulate and denature cellular components; it is used more often in diseases affecting the retinal circulation producing ischemia and the subsequent production of new vessels that produce sequels difficult to manage (vascular occlusions, diabetic retinopathy, macro- retinal aneurysm, etc.).
It is also used in the sealing treatment on retinal holes, photocoagulation of the trabecular meshwork, iris, ciliary body and in the treatment of glaucoma.

Another type of laser is the YAG laser that performs photodisruption procedures (controlled breaks) to drill a subsequent capsule after cataract surgery (capsular opacity.

Photodynamic Therapy:

terapia-fotodinamica
The Clinic has the Photodynamic Therapy Laser available for the treatment of macular degeneration associated with age, degenerative disease that affects the central part of the retina (macula) in people over 60 years of age, the second cause of partial blindness worldwide.
This disease is characterized by the loss of central vision with preservation of peripheral vision, images are distorted and blurred vision.Photodynamic therapy involves the application of an intravenous drug: Verteporfirin (VISUDYNE) approved by the FDA which is selectively deposited in the diseased area of the eye and when activated by a low level laser, causes the release of free radicals that cause thrombosis abnormal blood vessels that have been formed in this disease. This treatment is done on an outpatient basis, lasting approximately 20 minutes, with good tolerance and low sensitivity to the drug.

With the advent of new technologies for retinal diseases (antiangiogenic), the use of photodynamic therapy has greatly decreased, but it’s still used in selected cases. It is a good alternative that remains true and effective today.
